Volunteer in Ghana

Volunteer for teaching, orphanage or medical work

Located on the West African coast, Ghana is still reckoned to be the safest African Country and a great place to visit if this is your first experience of Africa. The Ghanaian people are friendly, laid back and helpful. They really want you to have a good time and to see Ghana in a positive light and will always offer help you ask.

The Ghanaian approach to life may be different from what you are used to and immersing yourself in this culture can be truly life changing. Some Ghanaian people have a “god will provide” approach and while this is often very positive it can make life frustrating at times. Because much travel is dependent on taxis and trotros, time keeping is variable, and things rarely start on time. Learning to accept the pace of life there and the constant optimism that things will work out is all part of the life changing experience of living and working abroad.

Ghanaians have a great deal to share with us about how to approach life and enjoy it!

About Ghana

What is it like to volunteer in Ghana?

Ghana is located on the west coast of Africa, bordered by the Ivory Coast, Togo and Burkina Faso. Well known for its sturdy democracy, Ghana has been praised by politicians including Barack Obama as one of the leading democratic nations in Africa.

Agriculture is the mainstay of the Ghanaian economy, responsible for 40% of employment. However, recent investment in oil production could see a marked change in Ghana's economic structure in coming years.

Ghana gained independence in 1957 from British colonial rule. There are still many remnants of the colonial era, including the old slave forts in Elmina and Cape Coast. Both a sad reminder of former times and an impressive spectacle, the forts are definitely worth checking out during your stay. Ghana also boasts rainforests and some of the most beautiful beaches in Africa.
