Jomo Kenyatta to JFK

Successfully sending volunteers abroad for 10 years

This week Kenya Airways set off on its first direct flight from Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta airport to New York JFK, with CNN reporting the moment as "historic". Although there were already numerous options for prospective volunteers in Kenya hoping to trade the American East Coast for East Africa, this new direct flight will make joining one of Agape's volunteering programmes in Africa even easier!

The new flight is also an example of the recent expansion of Africa airlines offering long-distance flights around the world. According to the IATA, African airlines saw a growth of over 7.5% in passenger traffic during 2017. And so far as we're concerned, this is good news! It can only help to further connect Africa with other countries and continents around the world, with Agape's volunteer programmes in Tanzania and South Africa also served by this expansion.

Aside from this, the airports involved in the new Kenya Airways flight really got us thinking about connectivity and the opportunities volunteer work abroad presents for understanding more about the country you're visiting. Most people will have heard of John F Kennedy, the American President from 1961-63, but how many of you know as much about Jomo Kenyatta, after whom Nairobi's airport is named? As the first Prime Minister (and then President) of a Kenya as an independent country, he's also a pretty big deal!

Of course, you could go and check out his Wikipedia page, but you'll understand far more by going and volunteering in Kenya yourself. So whether you're considering international volunteer work as a teacher in Kenya, or as a medical volunteer in Ghana, you'll always learn more than you think when you volunteer with Agape in Africa!
