2021: The year to start exploring again?

Successfully sending volunteers abroad for 10 years

Here at Agape Volunteers we’re sure that many of you are looking forward to leaving 2020 behind. It’s certainly been a tough year with so many confined to their homes. In April over half the world’s population was facing lockdown restrictions. Opportunities to travel and explore have therefore been very few and far between. But that hasn’t dampened our desire to get out into the world, meet new people, experience new cultures, and help out however we can!

With new ways to fight and combat Covid-19 there are reasons to look forward to 2021 with hope and positivity. We’ve always said that we’ll be ready to go as soon as it’s safe and possible to travel and volunteer abroad. And there are signs that it might be possible again in early 2021. So for anyone out there who had to put their 2020 plans on hold, why not come and volunteer abroad in 2021?

One thing the pandemic has taught us is that it’s hard to predict the future. Yesterday’s certainties can become tomorrow’s impossibilities. Equally, yesterday’s impossibilities can become tomorrow’s opportunities. It’s also taught us that if we remain vigilant and conscientious then new possibilities can be forged. Human beings all over the world have a remarkable ability to adapt and thrive no matter the obstacles. In fact, this is one of the things that can be experienced firsthand by volunteering in Africa.

We have adopted an additional range of health and safety guidelines so that we can ensure that all our volunteers working abroad remain safe and healthy. Of course, it’s also important that our volunteers remain beneficial to the communities they serve and don’t import the virus. This is why many countries now require a negative Covid-19 test for entry, and this is one of the things we will also be insisting upon. We think that’s a small price to pay for regaining our ability to explore and engage with new places and people!

So what are your plans for 2021? Have you considered being a volunteer teacher in Kenya? Or working as a volunteer in a local clinic or hospital on our medical programme in Tanzania? Or maybe you’d like to work on a well-established project working with children in Ghana? Whatever you decide, we hope you join us in putting 2020 behind and looking forward to 2021 with hope and positivity!
