Volunteer With Children in Ghana

Give children in poverty the care and love they need
Agape Volunteers is proud to support a project in Ghana which provides accommodation, education and pastoral support to underprivileged children in the area. Although local staff are extremely committed, childcare volunteers can be a valuable tool to supplement their stretched resources. This is where you come in!

Whether you work in childcare, social outreach or are a student, this placement is perfect for those who realise that children are our future, and want to help make this future as bright as possible.

Our childcare volunteering placement takes place in what is properly referred to as a 'children’s home'. It exists to provide support and care for vulnerable and at-risk children. These kids may have living parents or a family who are not currently able to care for them. We provide care when a child’s family cannot, and aim to return the children to a stable family environment once the vulnerable period has passed. We also place volunteers at a number of other care homes and initiatives in the local area.

What will I be doing?
While volunteering in an children's home in Ghana some of your duties will involve teaching small classes, and helping to organise structured games and activities. We run free educational sessions for local children and you may be asked to help out with these. Helping to foster a sense of family and community at the home is hugely important. In addition, you will be expected to engage in a wide range of other activities, depending on the specific needs of your placement. This will include plenty of practical work such as cleaning, laundry, cooking and washing the dishes, as well as painting classrooms and gardening.

Typical Week

Volunteers in Ghana childcare programmes are generally expected to work at their placement five days a week. Weekday mornings will start with breakfast with other volunteers, before you start working at around 8.30am. Children tend to learn best during the mornings, so your initial duties may well involve teaching a small class of children. At around 12pm you’ll get a break for lunch, which you can take with other volunteers and local staff. Afternoons are often devoted to games and activities and it will be your job to help run these.

You will generally finish your placement at around 4pm, though you’ll find that the children will often want you stay around to play more! After your placement you’ll get a chance to unwind with other volunteers and local team members over dinner, and we often organise games and activities of our own in the evenings.

Weekends are also your own but there are always plenty of extra Adventures to experience in Ghana!

Living With Agape

Most of our volunteers in Ghana in a specially designed volunteer house, which also acts as Agape’s base in Ghana. It’s a great place to live, with plenty going on! You will most likely be sharing dorm-style rooms with other volunteers, and these are typically single-sex.

Beyond that, you will have access to showers, toilets and a kitchen, though food is provided. We’re sure that you’ll enjoy your host’s delicious Ghanaian cooking! The centre can be a very vibrant place, with a great mixture of volunteers and local team members, and the beach-side setting provides the perfect opportunity for a host of unique activities.
