Volunteer As A Teacher in Ghana

Pass On Your Skills & Language To Eager Children
As a teaching volunteer in Ghana, you will be helping to provide lessons to children in one of our local partner schools. Though doing amazing work to nurture the talents, confidence and life skills of underprivileged children, these schools are often underfunded and consequently under-staffed.

This is where you come in!

Are you a teacher or current teaching student? Then you have both much to offer and to learn from volunteering as a teacher in Kenya.

Ghanaian schools are very vibrant places with most pupils extremely willing to learn. You may be asked to take lessons in English, maths or science, but don't worry if you feel your strengths lie outside these areas - the children you teach will benefit from your enthusiasm and your ability to construct sentences in English. Games and sports are another important part of school life, so please be prepared to get involved with these as well.

Will I be supported?
If you like you can spend the first few days working alongside a local teacher or established volunteer, but we also encourage our volunteers to bring their own ideas and to get stuck in! You can make the classroom your own with your own rules and decoration. This will help to develop your skills as a teacher whilst providing help to those most in need.

Typical Week

Volunteers are generally expected to work at their placement five days a week. Weekday mornings will start with breakfast with other volunteers, with school starting at around 8.30am. Mornings are usually devoted to traditional school subjects, usually broken into classes of one hour each. At around 12pm you’ll get a break for lunch, which you can take with other volunteers and local staff. In the afternoons you’ll be taking additional classes but there is often time for games and sports and it will be your job to help run these.

You will generally finish your placement at around 4pm, though you’ll find that the children will often want you stay around to play! After your placement you’ll get a chance to unwind with other volunteers and local team members over dinner, and we often organise games and activities of our own in the evenings. Weekends are also your own but there are always plenty of extra Adventures to do in Ghana!

Living With Agape

Most of our volunteers in Ghana in a specially designed volunteer house, which also acts as Agape’s base in Ghana. It’s a great place to live, with plenty going on! You will most likely be sharing dorm-style rooms with other volunteers, and these are typically single-sex.

Beyond that, you will have access to showers, toilets and a kitchen, though food is provided. We’re sure that you’ll enjoy your host’s delicious Ghanaian cooking! The centre can be a very vibrant place, with a great mixture of volunteers and local team members, and the beach-side setting provides the perfect opportunity for a host of unique activities.

Optional Extras

Agape Volunteers offers a variety of extra Adventures for volunteers in Ghana. There’s something for everyone, including jungle trekking, cultural excursions, and visits to a variety of National Parks and animal sanctuaries.
