Volunteer With Children in Ghana

Give children in poverty the care and love they need
Agape Volunteers is proud to support a project in Ghana which provides accommodation, education and pastoral support to local street children. Although local staff are extremely committed, they rely on us to supplement their stretched resources. This is where you come in!

Our placement is properly referred to as a 'children’s home'. It exists to provide support and care for vulnerable and at-risk children. These kids may have living parents or a family who are not currently able to care for them. We provide care when a child’s family cannot, and aim to return the children to a stable family environment once the vulnerable period has passed. We also place volunteers at a number of other care homes and initiatives in the local area.

What will I be doing?
As an orphanage volunteer in Ghana some of your duties will involve teaching small classes, as we run free classes for local children. You will also help with running structured games and activities. Helping to foster a sense of family and community at the home is hugely important – some of the children will have lacked this all their lives. In addition, you will be expected to engage in a wide range of other activities, depending on the specific needs of your placement. This will include plenty of practical work such as cleaning, laundry, cooking and the dishes, as well as painting classrooms and gardening.

Typical Week

Volunteers are generally expected to work at their placement five days a week. Weekday mornings will start with breakfast with other volunteers, before you start work at around 9am. Children tend to learn best during the mornings, so your initial duties may well involve teaching a small class of children. At around 12pm you’ll get a break for lunch, which you can take with other volunteers and local staff. Afternoons are often devoted to games and activities and it will be your job to help run these.

You will generally finish your placement at around 5pm, though you’ll find that the children will often want you stay around to play more! After your placement you’ll get a chance to unwind with other volunteers and local team members over dinner, and we often organise games and activities of our own in the evenings. Weekends are also your own but there are always plenty of extra Adventures to do in Ghana!

Living With Agape

Most of our volunteers in Ghana live at the local centre for street-children which also acts as Agape’s base in Ghana. Set right on the beach, it’s a great place to live with plenty going on. You will most likely be sharing dorm-style rooms with other volunteers, and these are typically single-sex.

Beyond that you will have access to showers, toilets, and a kitchen, though food is provided. We’re sure that you’ll enjoy your host’s delicious Ghanaian cooking! The centre can be a very vibrant place, with a great mixture of volunteers and local team members, and the beach-side setting provides the opportunity for a host of unique activities.

Included Extras

All of Agape's volunteers in Ghana also get the opportunity to take part in a free tour during their stay in Ghana. This will typically be of Jamestown, an historic area of Accra which is now the site of a fishing village. You’ll be guided around the area, and get the chance to understand a little more of the country’s rich cultural history, as well as life in Ghana’s capital today.

Optional Extras

Agape Volunteers offers a variety of extra Adventures for volunteers in Ghana. There’s something for everyone, including jungle trekking, cultural excursions, and visits to a variety of National Parks and animal sanctuaries.
